Core Classes
At OMS, our grade level teachers are broken into smaller teams, or groups of teachers, who share the same smaller group of students. This is a common middle level education model that serves to support students with a consistent group of teachers who work together with the same students over the course of the school year. By shrinking the number of students each team works with, we ensure that teachers get to know their students very well and have the opportunity to plan and prepare together to best meet their students’ social/emotional and academic needs.
All of the core classes; Math, Science, Social Studies, and English are taught within the team.
Required Classes
For all grade levels, Phy Ed, Music and Fine Arts classes will run as year long or semester courses and will meet for a skinny class hour following an A/B day rotation.
In 8th grade, students will take a College and Career Readiness class that will follow the elective schedule and meet for one semester every other day.
Health is a required course for 8th grade that runs on a skinny schedule.
Elective Courses
All students will have opportunities to take elective courses in 7th and 8th grade. Electives will run on a variety of schedules including blocks and skinny classes.
Exploratory Wheel
6th and 7th grade students take this rotation of classes that will allow them an opportunity to explore many different electives from computers and art to cooking and foreign language. These classes will meet for a full block on an A/B day rotation for approximately six weeks each.

Husky Connections
Full Year: 15 minutes daily
Our middle school advisory program is a valuable part of our day, where students develop meaningful relationships and a strong sense of school connectedness. Advisory groups are facilitated by a supportive adult who loops with his/her advisory students for all three years of middle school. **Students who wish to gain a foundation in a language may opt to take Spanish IA only and continue language studies at OHS with Spanish I.
*Spanish IA and IB would be equivalent to taking Spanish at OHS. Our classes are comparable to one quarter; high school level language courses are one semester in length.
**Students who wish to cover Spanish at OHS need to complete both Spanish IA and Spanish IB AND be successful on the final exam to move to Spanish II at OHS; this would be at the discretion of the instructor based on student performance on summative assessments. It goes on the high school transcript as a “P” for Pass but does NOT factor into a student’s GPA, nor does it count as one of the 28 credits required for graduation. Students always have the option to retake Spanish at OHS if they do not feel ready for Spanish II.
