Personal Safety/Self-Defense

Personal safety and self defense takes knowledge, skills and practice. This session will explore and practice the four levels of personal safety and skills in self defense. Students will learn how to practice Awareness, Avoidance, Assertion, and Action to protect themselves and others if an emergency occurs. Skills in self defense are based on non-contact Japanese karate techniques that utilize escapes from holds, blocks, strikes, kicking and grappling. The course will be taught by Dr. Meagher, who holds the rank of 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and has taught karate and self defense since 1988. All students can participate in comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothes while practicing self defense. This class will provide levels of practice for all. Those with previous martial arts training are encouraged to participate.
